Swimming Completes Day One of Rutgers Invitational in Fifth

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 21, 2014) - Highlighted by seven NCAA "B" qualifying cut times, the LIU Post women's swimming team competed in the preliminaries and the day one finals of Rutgers' Frank Elm Invitational on Friday.

In the first event of the preliminaries, the 200-yard freestlye relay, the Pioneers finished the second heat at 1:40.26, while the green and gold "A" relay squad finished the fourth heat in first-place, touching the pad at 1:37.04. The 500-yard freestyle saw sophomore Poppy Hill (London, England) complete the event at 5:15.31. The 200-yard individual medley boasted Carolin Rademacher (Isernhagen, Germany) and Christina Garcia Mauri (Malaga, Spain) finishing with NCAA "B" cut times, at 2:05.66 and 2:07.87, respectively, and Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) and Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) posting NCAA "B" cut times, at 2:04.75 and 2:04.83, respectively. 

The next preliminary event, the 50-yard freestyle, saw Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales) finishing at 24.51, while Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) completed the race at 24.13. Senior Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) posted a NCAA "B" cut time, with a 24.03 finish. Laura Bendfeldt (Grosshansdorf, Germany) and Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Colombia) also achieved "B" cut times in the 50-yard free, hitting the pad at 23.70 and 23.68, respectively. In the last preliminary event, the 400-yard medley relay, LIU Post's relay squads finished at 3:55.17 and 4:09.94.

The first event of the day one finals, the 200-yard freestyle relay, saw the green and gold "A" relay group winning the event and finshing at 1:33.42, good to break the meet and the LIU Post record in that feat, while the "B" team completed the relay at 1:40.26. Hill finished Event Two, the 500-yard freestyle relay at 5:15.31. 

Event Three, the 200-yard individual medley, once again saw Pettersson, Kwok, Rademacher and Garcia Mauri posting NCAA "B" cut times. Pettersson and Kwok finished at 2:03.74 and 2:05.91, respectively, while, Rademacher raced to a 2:04.11 NCAA "B" qualifying time and Garcia Mauri achieved the same feat at 2:06.12. Brazier and Bendfeldt also earned NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 50-yard freestyle. The pair finished consecutively at 23.70 and 23.72. Delehanty raced to a 24.25, while Soerensen and Jones completed their efforts at 24.55 and 24.36, respectively. The last event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay, saw a LIU Post second-place finish at 3:45.01.

After day one, the green and gold stand fifth of ten with 296 points. Head Coach Maureen Travers and the Pioneers are back in action Saturday, Nov. 22, when they are set to continue competing at the Frank Elm Invitational in Piscataway, N.J.
