Wrestling Places 14th at New York State Championships
Full ResultsITHACA, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2014) - The LIU Post wrestling team finished 14th out of 20 programs at the 2014 New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships on Sunday at Cornell's Barton Hall.
The Pioneers were led by a fourth-place finish from
Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) at the 157-pound weight class. Mordente won his first match over William Jacobs (Jamestown C.C.), before falling to Jahlani Callender (Hofstra) in the second round via an 8-3 decision. In the consolation bracket, Mordente rattled off three impressive decisions over Tyler Silverhorn (SUNY Oswego), Evan Wallace (Oneonta State) and Markus Scheidel (Columbia) to advance to the finals of the wrestlebacks. Here, he would meet Callender again, but this time Mordente was pinned at the 5:40 mark of the match.
Freshman
Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) registered an eighth-place performance at the 133-lb. weight discipline for the Pioneers, as well. He majored his first opponent, Oneonta State's Sean Hanson, by a score of 19-7, but next dropped a 10-2 major decision to Angelo Armenta of Columbia. In the wrestlebacks, Calderone pinned Jake Nicholson (Jamestown Community College) in 1:20, before losing a tight 4-3 decision to Rocco Rosso of Brockport State. Calderone qualified for the seventh-place final, where he was defeated by Buffalo's Sean Peacock in a 15-6 major decision.
Head Coach
Joe Patrovich and the LIU Post wrestling team will return to the mat on Saturday (Nov. 29) for the Journeyman/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Pioneers will face Old Dominion and Binghamton, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
