Swimming Finishes With Nine Wins at ESU Invite

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 1, 2014) - On Saturday, the LIU Post swimming team competed in the East Stroudsburg Invitational along with the Warriors, Millersville, and Kutztown. The Pioneers took home nine wins over the 16-event meet, including two first-place finishes from senior
Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada).
Garriock came away with gold in the 100-yard backstroke after finishing at 1:01.12. She also grabbed a top time of 59.15 in the 100-yard butterfly, while teammate
Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) followed behind in second with a 59.64 clocking. Soerensen secured a gold herself in the 50-yard freestyle, as she touched the pad at 25.01.
Senior
Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) pulled out a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:30.80). Junior
Carolin Rademacher (Isernhagen, Germany) trailed in second, recording a time of 18:50.23. Hedberg managed to secure silver as well with a 2:20.48 in the 200-yard individual medley, while Rademacher won the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.58).
Three other Pioneers each picked up a victory in an individual event - junior
Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden), and sophomores
Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom),and
Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.). Pettersson's win came in the 100-yard breaststroke, logging a 1:10.30 clocking. Jones finished with a time of 56.57 in the 100-yard freestyle. Kwok completed the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.33, with classmate
Kirsty Elliott (Edinburgh, Scotland) grabbing silver in the event (2:20.90).
The green and gold also managed Top-2 finishes in each of the two relay events of the day - 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. In the 200-medley, Jones, Pettersson, senior
Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.) and junior
Maxi Russo (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) swam to a first-place time of 1:52.49. Kwok, Elliott, Soerensen and junior
Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) were the runners-up (1:53.92). In the 200-free, Garriock, Kwok, Hew and sophomore
Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) pulled out a second-place win (1:40.09).
Now, the Pioneers head into postseason action, first traveling to the Metropolitan Conference Championships at Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. The meet will run from Friday - Sunday, Feb. 15-17.
