Baseball Beats STAC in Series Finale, 5-4
Box Score POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team pounded out 13 hits in Sunday's 5-4 series finale win over East Coast Conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, N.Y.
Both squads battled back-and-forth throughout the contest, with neither team leading by more than two runs.
The Pioneers (12-10, 6-5 ECC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first turn at bat. With one on and one out, junior
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) doubled down the left-field line, scoring senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.). Later in the inning, freshman
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) reached on an infield single that scored Arena.
The Spartans (20-12, 10-6 ECC) responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Both teams were then held off the board until the green and gold tied the game in the sixth. With the bases loaded, sophomore
John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) grounded into a double play that allowed Asbaty to score.
Later, in the eighth, Bellock singled to right, scoring junior
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.), to give the visitors a 4-3 edge. The Spartans responded, however, tying it in the bottom half of the inning.
In the ninth, Asbaty came up with the bases loaded and one out. The lefty flied out to center, allowing Iacono to come home with the game-winning run.
Asbaty finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Vidal went 3-for-4 and scored a run in the win.
On the mound, freshman
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) tossed 5.1 scoreless innings in relief. Fellow freshman
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) allowed one earned run in three innings to pick up his second win.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 15), when they head to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to take on Mercy in a make-up game from earlier this season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
