BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2014) - A three-homer day by junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.), along with some spectacular pitching, led to the No. 18 LIU Post softball team's doubleheader sweep of Bridgeport on Thursday at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y.

The Pioneers (31-5, 17-1 ECC) took both ends of the twinbill over the Purple Knights (16-22, 9-11 ECC) by scores of 8-0 in five-inning bouts.

LIU Post put up three-spots in both the first and second innings of the matinee, which was more than enough for senior hurler Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.), as she tossed five innings of three-hit ball, walking one, and fanning five.

After an RBI double by senior outfielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) in the bottom of the first, Dzierzynski followed with her first four-bagger of the day. Freshman first baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) and senior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) added RBI base knocks in the second, while Gonzalez chipped in her second RBI of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Hagenah picked up her second RBI on a solo blast to center. The Pioneers then closed out the contest in the bottom of the fifth when Weber singled home senior second baseman Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.), who had tripled in the at-bat before.

Carmine led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), Hagenah, Dzierzynski, and Weber recorded two hits apiece.

Game Two was much of the same as starter Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) surrendered just one hit and no walks, while striking out six, over five innings of scoreless softball.

Dzierzynski once again blasted a homer in the opening frame, this time a three-run shot to left-center. Senior outfielder Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) lifted a two-run roundtripper in the second inning to extend the Pioneers' lead to 5-0.

A sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) followed by an RBI single down the left-field line by classmate and third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) added another two runs to the home side in the third frame.

Dzierzynski rounded out the scoring and ended the day with a walk-off homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth. She finished the nightcap 2-for-2 with two home runs, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Gonzalez pitched in a 2-for-2 showing with two runs scored.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Apr. 19), as they head to Sparkill, N.Y. for an East Coast Conference doubleheader at St. Thomas Aquinas. First pitch is set for noon.
