Baseball Earns 5-3 Win Over Dowling in Series Finale
Box Score BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth Monday to earn an East Coast Conference series split with Dowling, 5-3, at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven, N.Y.
The Pioneers (14-12, 8-7 ECC) capitalized on four Dowling (24-10, 13-3 ECC) miscues, en route to a second-straight win over the ECC-leading Golden Lions.
The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first after senior
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) led off with a single. Freshman
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, and advanced all the way to third on an error by the Golden Lions' catcher, allowing Tolan to open the scoring. Junior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) then hit a one-out single, scoring Tinney for the 2-0 edge.
Dowling plated a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to go ahead, 3-2, with three frames remaining.
In the eighth, with two on and one out, Brunetti singled through the right side, scoring Tinney to tie it.
Later, in the ninth, Tolan came through with a two-out single through the middle, scoring senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) and sophomore
John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) with the go-ahead runs.
Tinney, who started the game as the designated hitter, tossed a scoreless eighth and sent down the Golden Lions in order in the bottom of the ninth to improve to 3-0 on the season. Fellow freshman
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) started for the Pioneers. The righty went seven innings, allowed four hits, gave up one earned run (two unearned), struck out four and walked one.
Tolan (2-for-5) and Brunetti (2-for-3) drove in two runs each to pace the green and gold.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 22) when they take on Dominican in a non-conference tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
