Long Deals Baseball to 6-2 Win Over Dominican
Box Score POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2014) - On Tuesday, the LIU Post baseball team got a strong effort from freshman hurler
James Long (Oceanside, N.Y.), who picked up his first collegiate win in the Pioneers' 6-2 victory over Dominican at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, N.Y.
The Pioneers (15-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) reached on an error. Junior
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) plated Iacono with a triple, giving the visitors the early edge.
Dominican (16-18) responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, but that was all they would get against the Pioneers' pitching staff.
In the fifth, the Pioneers took advantage of two Dominican errors en route to tying the game when freshman
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error that allowed senior
Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) to score.
The green and gold then pounded out four hits and scored three runs in their half of the sixth to retake the lead for good. A single from junior
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y), followed by a doubles from Iacono and Arena, scored two runs. Later in the inning, McCarthy singled down the line in left, scoring Arena.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the ninth when Vidal reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Fagan to come home.
Long went 6.1 innings to earn his first win. The tall lefty scattered 10 hits and gave up two runs (none earned). He struck out five and walked one as well in his third career start. Senior
John Susino (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore
Christian Stancavage (West Islip, N.Y.) tossed 1.2 and 1.0 innings of scoreless relief, respectively.
Arena finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Fagan, Vidal and McCarthy also collected multi-hit games to pace the Pioneers.
The green and gold return to action on Wednesday (Apr. 23), when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to play a make-up game against East Coast Conference foe Mercy. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
