Women's Lacrosse Listed Second in Latest National Polls
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2014) - Though it has not lost a game in two years, the LIU Post women's lacrosse team fell to second in Monday's IWLCA and Lacrosse Magazine Top-15 rankings. It is the first time since May 2012 that the Pioneers have been ranked lower than No. 1.
The green and gold won their 38th- and 39th-consecutive game last week, en route to claiming the 2014 East Coast Conference regular-season title. Last Thursday, LIU Post rallied from a 13-11 deficit with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to beat No. 4 New Haven, 14-13. Freshman attacker
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) scored the game-winner with 27 seconds left. Two days later, the Pioneers, behind an eight-point day (7 G, 1 A) from senior attacker
Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.), doubled up St. Thomas Aquinas, 18-9.
Adelphi overtook LIU Post for the top spot in both polls. The Panthers earned 218 votes (120 first-place), narrowly edging the Pioneers' 216-vote (105 first-place) total. Limestone, New Haven and Lindenwood (Mo.) rounded out the top five squads.
Florida Southern, Lock Haven and Pfeiffer occupied the respective No. 6, 7 and 8 slots. Mercyhurst and Le Moyne flip-flopped in the two tallies to conclude the Top-10.
Head Coach
Meghan McNamara and her LIU Post squad are back in action Thursday (May. 1), when they host Molloy in an East Coast Conference Championship semifinal at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y. The opening draw is slated for 3 p.m.
