Baseball Beats Molloy, 4-1
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 4, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team got back to its winning ways Friday, defeating East Coast Conference rival Molloy, 4-1, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y.
Freshman pitcher Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) picked up the win for the Pioneers (8-7, 2-2 ECC), while Max Schonfeld took the loss for the Lions (8-12, 4-5 ECC).
LIU Post fell behind early after Molloy opened the scoring in the third inning. John Galanoudis singled to right, knocking in Brian Murphy for the 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers responded though with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) smacked a double that two-hopped the left-center field wall, which brought around senior Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.), who had a one-out single earlier in the inning. Junior Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) followed with a single through the left side to score Iacono.
Later, in the seventh, Iacono knocked in his second run of the afternoon with a single to right field, again plating Tolan. After Arena walked, Iacono stole third and scored the Pioneers' fourth run on a Lions' miscue.
DeCarli went six innings, scattering six hits and allowing the one earned run. The righty struck out seven in his third collegiate start. Fellow freshman Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) earned his first save, tossing three innings and allowing just one hit. Iacono finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Shortstop Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.) added two hits for his fourth two-hit game of the season.
The Pioneers and Lions resume their four-game set on Saturday (Apr. 5) with a doubleheader at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. First pitch is set for noon.
