UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday against East Coast Conference rival Molloy, winning Game One, 7-4, but dropping Game Two, 9-2, at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y.

In the opener, the Pioneers (9-8,3-3 ECC) struck first with two runs in the top of the first. After leadoff man Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) tripled to left field, senior Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove him in with a single to left-center. Junior Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.) later doubled to right-center, scoring Iacono.

Molloy (9-13, 5-6 ECC) responded with four runs of its own, plating two in the fifth and one each in the seventh and eighth.

In the ninth, the green and gold bats erupted for five runs. Following John Bellock's (Glen Cove, N.Y.) single to open the frame, junior Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) doubled, putting runners on second and third. Tolan then singled, scoring Bellock, and Iacono laid down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Junior Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) drove in Alessi with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4. Junior Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) followed with a run-scoring groundout and Vidal tripled, which scored Iacono. Freshman Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) brought home the Pioneers' final run with a single that scored Vidal.

Tolan was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in Game One, scoring two runs and driving in one. Iacono, Vidal, Bellock and Alessi all had two-hit games, while Vidal also drove in two.

Freshman James Long (Oceanside, N.Y.) started for the Pioneers, going 6.2 innings. The lefty allowed 10 hits and three earned runs, while striking out eight. Sophomore Christian Stancavage (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up his first win, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing an earned run. Sophomore Chris Anderson (West Islip, N.Y.) notched his first save, pitching a perfect ninth.

In Game Two, LIU Post found itself down 3-0 after the Lions plated three in the third.

Brunetti drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but Molloy scored six in the fifth to go ahead 9-1. The Pioneers would score a run in the seventh, but that would be all.

Arena and freshman Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each had two-hit games in the nightcap.

The Pioneers and Lions wrap up their four-game set Sunday (Apr. 6) with an afternoon matinee at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y. First pitch is set for noon.
