Watkin, Rohr Receive ECC Scholar-Athlete Awards
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (May 15, 2014) - Seniors
Jonathon Watkin (Doncaster, England) of the men's soccer team and
Melissa Rohr (Bethpage, N.Y.) of the women's lacrosse squad were named Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports by the East Coast Conference on Monday. The honors were bestowed upon both Watkin and Rohr at the end-of-year ECC Awards Dinner, held in Bridgeport, Conn.
Watkin displayed brilliance both on the pitch and in the classroom. The Physical Education major was recognized as a CoSIDA/Capital One Third-Team All-American for his grades and has maintained a stellar 3.80 GPA. His grade-point average helped LIU Post capture the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for the third-straight season.
The senior midfielder compiled six goals and four assists in 2013, good for a total of 16 points. Watkin provided some clutch moments on the season, none bigger than his game-winning goal in the waning moments of the ECC Championship semifinal against Mercy back on Nov. 6. His efforts won him a bevy of honors, including a nod to the NSCAA Divsion II All-America Team.
Rohr's performance in her studies earned her an impressive second-consecutive Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. A Secondary Education major, she boasts a 3.83 grade-point average. On the field, the Bethpage, N.Y. native was tabbed as the East Coast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year and claimed All-ECC first-team recognition.
Rohr has started all 19 games and scooped up 35 ground balls for the Pioneers in 2014, to go along with eight caused turnovers and five draw controls. Additionally, she was named a member of the IWLCA Division II All-North Region first-team. Rohr and the Pioneers will face Adelphi in the national semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championship on Saturday (May 17) in Salem, Va.
