Box Score 2 BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 3, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team split Saturday's East Coast Conference doubleheader with Queens, taking the opener, 3-1, and dropping the nightcap, 5-1, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y.
Junior pitcher
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) went the distance for the Pioneers (18-18, 11-12 ECC) in Game One, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out nine.
With a runner on second and two out, senior
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score fellow senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) with the contest's first run.
Queens would tie it in the seventh, but the green and gold responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead for good.
This time, a two-out walk to junior
Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) sparked a rally. Alessi stole second and Tolan singled him home to put the Pioneers up 2-1. Freshman
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) then tripled to right center, plating Tolan.
In the nightcap, Queens used a four-run fourth to pull away from the Pioneers.
After the Knights scored in the top of the second, LIU Post answered with an RBI groundout from junior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) to tie it.
Then, in the fourth, the visitors plated four and would come away with the 5-1 victory.
The Pioneers and Knights wrap up their four-game set on Sunday (May 4) in Flushing, N.Y. First pitch is slated for noon.
