BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2015) - On Thursday night, the LIU Post volleyball team swept the season series from University of New Haven, following a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) at the Pratt Recreation Center.
In their first meeting of 2015, the Pioneers (11-4) defeated the Chargers (8-8) by a 3-1 final at the Bentley University Invitational on Sept. 4.
LIU Post jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set and never looked back. Sophomore outside/middle/right-side hitter
Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) put down back-to-back kills to cap off the run. Freshman middle/right-side hitter
Elise Strange (Chesapeake, Va.) added two kills, while freshman setter
Giulia Genna (Civitella San Paolo, Italy) served an ace.
New Haven managed to close the gap to 19-18, but the Pioneers wrapped up the game on a 6-0 spurt to take the first set, 25-18. A bad set by UNH's Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla.) gave the green and gold a 1-0 edge in the match.
In the second set, LIU Post again built a six-point cushion. A kill by freshman outside hitter
Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) gave the hosts a 13-7 advantage.
New Haven responded though with a 9-3 burst to even the game at 16-all. However, a
Taryn McCullouch (Buena Park, Calif.) kill sparked a 6-0 run that propelled the Pioneers to a 25-17 second-set victory. McCullouch recorded the kill that clinched the game, as well.
Up 14-12 in the third set, LIU Post, behind a kill and block from McCullouch, widened its advantage to 17-12, forcing a New Haven timeout.
Shortly thereafter, the Chargers managed to cut the deficit to 18-16. Yet, junior middle/right-side hitter
Clara Fischer (Bondorf, Germany) came off the bench to provide two key kills and an assist for the Pioneers in securing an eventual 25-19 win.
LIU Post, which hit at a .283 clip in the match, was led by Valenza and Londot, both of whom collected 11 kills. Additionally, Londot totaled 15 digs for a double-double. McCullouch added eight kills. Strange amassed seven kills and three blocks. Genna, who allocated 32 assists, and senior setter/right-side hitter
Monica Amador (Cedar Park, Texas) had five kills each. Amador also dished out seven assists and contributed seven digs. Senior libero
Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) served four aces.
Head Coach
Shellane Ogoshi and the Pioneers return to action Saturday (Oct. 3), when they face non-conference opponents Le Moyne College and Pace University at a tri-match in Pleasantville. The Pioneers will face the Dolphins at 1 p.m., before squaring off against the host Setters at 3 p.m.
