BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2015) - Sophomore defender
Grace Ilias (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) tallied a pair of first-half goals Wednesday afternoon to lead the LIU Post field hockey team to a 3-1 win versus Northeast-10 Conference foe Pace University at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
It didn't take long for Ilias to get the Pioneers (9-5, 5-4 NE-10) on the scoreboard. Just 3:49 into the contest, she put back an
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) rebound from the right side of the circle to stake LIU Post to a quick 1-0 cushion.
Then, in the 19th minute, Ilias struck again to widen the green and gold's lead. The Ontario native re-directed an
Abi Sawyer (Wakefield, West Yorkshire) shot past Pace (4-11, 1-8 NE-10) sophomore goalie Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.), making it a 2-0 game.
In the second half, senior forward
Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.) capped off the scoring for LIU Post. More than midway through the period, Margiotta converted on a penalty stroke to put the hosts up 3-0. The tally was her fifth of the 2015 season.
That proved to be all the Pioneers needed in securing their fourth-consecutive victory. LIU Post held a 12-11 edge in shots and a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners in the contest.
Between the pipes, junior goalies
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) and
Savanah Cummings (Midlothian, Va.) split the two halves for the second-straight game. While Parks never faced a shot on goal in her 35 minutes of work, Cummings made six saves, five of which occurred in the last 10:58 of regulation.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and her LIU Post squad continue their four-game homestand Saturday (Oct. 24), when they welcome in NE-10 rival American International College to Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The contest is slated for a noon start. Prior to the game, the Pioneers will recognize their four graduating seniors, in their annual Senior Day ceremony.
