WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2015) - Despite holding an early lead, the LIU Post women's tennis team lost a hard-fought 6-3 decision to Queens College in an East Coast Conference tilt Saturday at the Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center.
The Pioneers (3-4, 2-3 ECC) held a 3-2 advantage after second singles, but the Knights (6-0, 5-0 ECC) rallied to take the last four flights to snatch victory away from defeat.
In doubles action, seniors
Didi Fatchikova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and
Lucie Chrastecka (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) beat Andrea Samson (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and Sumeera Kamil (New Delhi, India) at the No. 1 position, 8-6, to put LIU Post in front.
However, Queens took the next two doubles matches. Freshman
Shanice Arthur (Brookville, N.Y.) and junior
Heena Kewalramani (Bangkok, Thailand) fell by an 8-3 score to Angelika Sobiecka (Miawa, Poland) and Cami Abdallah (Rabat, Morocco) at the second flight. Junior
Laura Harwell (Alabaster, Ala.) and sophomore
Meagan Byrne (Deer Park, N.Y.) were blanked (8-0) by Anne Strating (Krommenie, Netherlands) and Line Sorsdahl Aasen (Bergen, Norway) in third doubles.
The Pioneers re-gained the edge though at the start of singles play. Arthur continued her dominance with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Kamil at the top flight, while Fatchikova led 3-0 at No. 2 singles, until her opponent, Sobiecka, retired.
Yet, the tide turned in the Knights' favor at third singles. Chrastecka won the first set (6-3) against Samson, before dropping the next two by counts of 6-1 and 10-6.
Head Coach
Walter Giacometti and his LIU Post squad return to action Thursday (Oct. 8), when they face Concordia College in a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m. in Bronxville.
