BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2015) - Tied 62-62 in the final seconds of regulation, senior guard
Devon McMillan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted a game-winning lay-up to send the LIU Post men's basketball team to a 64-62 victory over East Coast Conference rival Dowling College at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Prior to McMillan's winning heroics, senior forward
Michael Phillip (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came down with a key offensive board, off a missed
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) jumper, to give the Pioneers (7-2, 3-0 ECC) a fresh shot clock.
LIU Post trailed 12-3 from the onset of the contest, until an 18-2 run over a near seven-minute stretch put the hosts in front 21-14 at the 8:18 mark. McMillan and junior guard
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) combined to knock down three trifectas in the burst. Junior forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.) capped it off with a put-back lay-up.
Though the Golden Lions (5-4, 1-1 ECC) subsequently managed to close the gap to one point (23-22) in the opening half, the Pioneers, who have now won three straight and five of six, brought a 33-29 advantage into the intermission.
Up by one possession (39-36) more than three minutes into the latter session, LIU Post widened its lead to a game-high nine points (47-38) with 13:57 remaining, via an 8-2 spurt. Dotson sparked the run with back-to-back alley-oop dunks. Junior guard
Bryant Webb (Parlin, N.J.) and Hall buried a lay-up apiece to close it out.
However, Dowling eventually tied the game at 52-all on a pair of Evan Maxwell (East Islip, N.Y.) free throws with 6:28 to go. From there, the two squads exchanged five more tied scores, before McMillan's lay-up off the glass won it for LIU Post.
The Pioneers dominated the glass in the victory, outrebounding the Golden Lions by a 64-41 count. They also shot 50.0 percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc in the first half.
Hall poured in a team-high 14 points. Senior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Phillip grabbed 12 boards, and added five points and two blocks. Dotson recorded his second-consecutive double-double (10 points, 15 rebounds). In addition to the game-winning shot, McMillan collected nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and his LIU Post squad round out their four-game homestand on Thursday (Dec. 17), when they face Franklin Pierce University at the Pratt Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m.
