Women's Swimming Places Third at ECAC Winter Championships

- Over the weekend, the LIU Post women's swimming team finished third out of 11 programs at the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference Winter Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.

Freshman Karis Fuller (London, England), who was named the ECAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet, won three individual events, including the two long-distance races. She defeated her competition in the 1,650-yard freestyle, touching the pad at an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:23.22, while also finishing first in the 500-free (5:06.87) and the 400 IM (4:32.65).

Fellow freshman Eline Swensen (Langhus, Norway) added respective sixth-place marks of 5:22.33 and 18:08.43 in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle, in addition to clocking a seventh-place 2:16.58 in the 200-yard butterfly.

The duo of senior Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) and sophomore Laura Bendfeldt (Grosshansdorf, Germany) finished 1-2 in a pair of strokes at the meet.

Brazier and Bendfeldt individually recorded NCAA "B" cuts of 51.69 and 52.17 in the 100-yard freestyle, and times of 23.92 and 24.13 in the 50-yard freestyle. Brazier's 23.92 in the 50-free was an NCAA provisional mark, as well.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Brazier again swam an NCAA "B" cut, racing to a first-place time of 1:52.21. Bendfeldt came in third, after clocking a 1:56.58.

The Pioneers dominated the relays, as they won all four of which they competed in. Senior Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom), freshman Elin Kvarnemar (Varberg, Sweden), Bendfeldt and Brazier posted an NCAA "B" cut 1:36.01 in the 200-yard free relay. Additionally, the same group notched a top time of 3:33.27 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Bendfeldt and Brazier also joined Fuller and Swensen to clock a first-place 7:45.50 in the 800-yard free relay, and Jones and sophomore Jacqueline Tonn (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) in a first-place effort (3:55.42) in the 400-yard medley relay.

Jones, who was fourth (24.64) in the 50-free, and Bendfeldt were 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly, with times of 57.01 and 57.11, respectively. Kvarnemar came in fifth (1:01.35) in the 100-yard backstroke.

Freshman Shannon de la Garza (Tijeras, N.M.) swam a 2:32.66 in the 200-yard breaststroke, which was good for eighth place. Tonn contributed an eighth-place finish (1:10.48) in the 100-breast. Senior Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) added an 18th-place time of 2:04.06 in the 200-free.

Head Coach Michael Travers and his LIU Post squad return to the pool in 2016, when they host Siena College on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Pratt Natatorium at 1 p.m.
