BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2015) - On Thursday afternoon, the LIU Post women's lacrosse team selected seniors
Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.),
Kali Maxwell (Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Emily Hanifan (Hicksville, N.Y.) and junior
Honey Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) as captains for the 2015 campaign.
"They are a driven and passionate group," said Head Coach
Meghan McNamara (East Northport, N.Y.). "They represent the values of what this team is all about...We are excited to have them lead us into the 2015 season."
Pierro has made 53 career appearances for the Pioneers from 2012-14. Heading into the 2015 campaign, she has accumulated 61 points (47 G, 14 A), while racking up 56 draw controls and 44 ground balls. Last season, the Holbrook native ranked in the Top-5 on the team in goals (31), draws (36), ground balls (30) and caused turnovers (10), all of which were career-highs for Pierro. She earned All-East Coast Conference first-team and IWLCA All-North Region second-team honors for her efforts.
Despite losing part of 2014 to injury, Maxwell and Hanifan helped to anchor an LIU Post defense that limited opponents to the third-lowest goals-against average (6.2) in Division II, also an ECC-best. Maxwell, an All-ECC first-team honoree last year, has played in 44 career games, totaling an impressive 140 draw controls and 55 ground balls, along with 31 caused turnovers.
Hanifan, who landed a spot on the All-ECC second-team as a junior, has stepped onto the field in 46 career contests as a Pioneer. Over the course of the last three seasons, Hanifan has won 59 ground balls and 12 draws, while causing 28 turnovers.
Roche started in all 20 contests in 2014. Out of the midfield, she ranked fourth in the ECC in caused turnovers (21) and fifth in ground balls (41), Her 21 caused turnovers were tops on the team, as well. Additionally, in two years in Brookville, Roche has registered four career points, on three goals and one assist.
LIU Post kicks off the 2015 season on Saturday, Feb. 28, when it hosts Holy Family in a non-conference match-up at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
