BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 1, 2015) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post softball team secured a sweep of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex. The Pioneers won by the scores of 7-4 and 2-0.

In the opener, the Pioneers (11-6, 7-0 ECC) jumped out to a quick four-run lead in the last of the first. A two-out rally to load the bases eventually led to a Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) grand slam.

The Purple Knights (4-12, 0-2 ECC) fought back though, scoring twice in the third, and once in the fourth and fifth innings, to even the score at 4-4.

In the top of the fourth, UB had an opportunity to tack on another run, but senior outfielder Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) gunned down Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) at the plate with two outs.

Palmeri would give LIU Post the lead again in the fifth. An infield single on a line shot to the third baseman scored Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) for the eventual game-winning run.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers added some key insurance. Again with two outs, Buckley hit an RBI triple off the centerfield fence, and was later awarded home on obstruction.

Senior starter Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) tossed 4.1 innings in the no-decision. She fanned five in the process. Junior hurler Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) earned the win in the relief, as she pitched 2.2 scoreless frames of one-hit, one-strikeout ball.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) took control of the circle in Game Two. She threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout with one walk and four strikeouts.

Martin also got some early support from her catcher, senior Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.). Her two-run homer in the bottom of the first proved to be all LIU Post needed in the winning effort.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the field Friday (Apr. 3), when they face non-conference opponent and No. 19 Southern New Hampshire in Manchester, N.H. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
