BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2015) - On Monday afternoon, the LIU Post baseball team defeated East Coast Conference rival Dowling, 5-3, in the finale of a four-game set at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven.
The Pioneers (12-10, 10-6 ECC) were led by a pair of sophomores: pitcher
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) and
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.).
Despite running into some early trouble, Jagiello seemed to get stronger as the game went on. Through the first three innings, Jagiello stranded five Dowling (17-8, 7-5 ECC) baserunners.
It was in the top of the third when Fagan made his presence felt. After junior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) singled to put runners on first and second with two outs, Fagan served a single to right, scoring sophomore catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) with the first Pioneer run.
Then, in the fifth, Fagan plated graduate outfielder
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) with a single before Asbaty scored on a wild pitch and an error allowed junior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) to score, making it 4-0 LIU Post.
Jagiello would pitch seven scoreless before allowing a leadoff triple in the eighth, ending his afternoon. The righty went 7-plus innings, allowed one earned run on seven hits, walked three and struck out seven.
In the top of the ninth, the Pioneers would add an insurance run. Again, it came off the bat of Fagan, who drove in Groeneveld after the junior smacked a two-out double to right-center.
In relief, junior
Dillon Burke (Plainview, N.Y.) allowed two earned runs in the bottom of the ninth before getting a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to shut the door.
Fagan finished 4-for-5 with the three RBIs. Iacono went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Groeneveld recorded two hits in five trips and scored a run.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Thursday (Apr. 16) when they host Dominican in a non-conference tilt at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
