BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2015) - Behind yet another stellar outing from sophomore pitcher
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.), the LIU Post baseball team defeated East Coast Conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-3, at the LIU Post Baseball Field on Thursday.
The Pioneers (9-6, 7-2 ECC) scored early and often, tallying all nine of their runs in the first four innings of action. The green and gold plated one in the first, three in both the second and third and two more in the fourth.
DeCarli kept the Spartan (10-7-1, 6-3 ECC) hitters off balance with a mixture of off-speed pitches and a nasty two-seam fastball.
Offensively, four different Pioneers had two-hit games. Sophomore outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.), graduate outfielder
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.), junior infielder
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior shortstop
Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) all produced multi-hit contests.
Daley collected two RBIs and scored a run, while Iacono, Bowers and Alessi each drove in runs as well. Red-shirt seniors
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) and
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) added an RBI apiece for the green and gold.
DeCarli threw 7.0 strong innings to earn his third win of the season. The righty allowed five hits, one earned run and struck out six.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Apr. 4), when they head to Pomona to resume their four-game set with a doubleheader at St. Thomas Aquinas. First pitch for the double dip is set for noon.
