OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2015) - The LIU Post softball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader at the NYIT Softball Field on Tuesday. The Pioneers secured Game One, 6-1, but dropped the nightcap, 14-6. The green and gold sport a 27-9 overall and a 21-3 conference mark through the 2015 campaign.
The commencing contest saw an early LIU Post lead, as
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence. In the top of the third,
Mackenzie Buckey (St. James, N.Y.) grounded into a fielders choice that helped freshman shortstop
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) cross the plate to put the Pioneers up by three, while an
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) dinger down the left field line in the same frame gave the green and gold a 5-0 advantage. The Bears (25-19) tacked on a tally in the fourth, but sophomore second baseman
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) lifted a solo homerun to left to clinch the 6-1 victory.
Sophomore
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) commanded the circle through seven innings, fanning two and walking just one through her complete-game effort. With the win, Martin improves to a 14-2 record.
The LIU Post offense started early in Game Two, as Dzierzynski and
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) doubles, and a Peet single in the top of the first, gave the Pioneers a three-run advantage. NYIT answered in the third and fourth to tally eight runs. In the fifth, the green and gold battled back for three more scores, but they could not eclipse the Bears' advantage.
Seniors
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) and
Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppague, N.Y.) combined for a five-frame effort on the mound. The pair fanned two and walked five.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and Pioneer softball returns to the field Thursday, Apr. 23, when they are set to face non-conference opponent New Haven at the LIU Post Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
