Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 22, 2015) - Trailing 10-8 in the final three-plus minutes of regulation, the No. 9/10 LIU Post women's lacrosse team rallied to even the score with 28 seconds left, but lost to No. 15/11 West Chester in the final ticks, 11-10, in non-conference action Wednesday at Vonnie Gros Field.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Pioneers, who dipped to 12-3 on the season. As for the Rams, they improved to a record of 11-4 overall.
Red-shirt sophomore attacker
Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) led the comeback by finding senior midfielder
Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior defender/midfielder
Honey Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) in the last 3:24 of the second half. Roche's game-tying goal came just over a minute after Pierro was issued a yellow card, forcing the green and gold to be down a player.
However, West Chester's Hannah Cowan (Wilmington, Del.) found the back of the cage with only three seconds remaining to send the Rams to the victory.
Late in the opening period, LIU Post found itself trailing 4-1, until a quick two-goal spurt in a 37-second stint closed the gap to one goal. Sophomore defender/midfielder
Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) scored on an unassisted effort at the 8:54 mark to make it a 4-3 contest.
WCU managed to re-gain its three-goal cushion before halftime though, and carried a 6-3 lead into the break.
Nearly midway through the latter half, the Pioneers were still behind by three goals (8-5). Pierro and Delaney then struck for back-to-back tallies in a near three-minute stretch to again cut the deficit to one goal (8-7).
LIU Post eventually managed to tie things up with 28 seconds left, on Roche's short-handed marker, but West Chester pulled off the late heroics to keep the game from going into overtime.
Pierro (3 G, 1 A) and Delaney (1 G, 3 A) tallied four points apiece in the loss. Pierro also won three ground balls and three draws, while Delaney added two draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Douglas and sophomore attacker
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) each netted two goals. Roche pitched in three draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, in addition to notching the game-tying goal.
