Martin and Swantek Garner Daktronics East Region Honors
NEWARK, Del. (May 11, 2015) - On Monday, LIU Post sophomore pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and junior designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) claimed places on the 2015 Daktronics/Division II CCA All-East Region squads. Martin was named to a first-team All-Region performer, while Swantek achieved second-team kudos.
Both Martin and Swantek were designated as CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honorees on Thursday (May 7), and each player also received All-ECC First Team distinctions earlier this season.
Martin, the East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, finished her season with an 18-6 record and a 1.61 ERA. The sophomore threw 17 complete games and saved two of her best performances for the NCAA East Sub-Regional against both Queens (N.Y.) and Southern New Hampshire. On Friday (May 8), Martin tossed a four-hit shutout against the Knights, exacting revenge against the team that had bested her in the East Coast Conference Championship a week prior. Then on Saturday (May 9), she won a pitcher's duel with Daktronics/Division II CCA All-East Region Pitcher and Player of the Year Ali Maloof of Southern New Hampshire. Martin yielded just one hit as the Pioneers knocked off the Penmen by a final score of 1-0, allowing the team to advance to the East Sub-Region Championship.
Swantek was one of the team's top hitters all season long, as she posted a .281 batting average with eight home runs and 31 runs batted in. The junior drove in three or more runs in five contests over the course of the spring, Earlier in the season, Swantek posted a three-game stretch in which she hit .700 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. She led the team with a .536 slugging percentage, and also hit a team-best 13 doubles to go along with 18 walks and a .366 on-base percentage.
