KINGSTON, Jamaica (Aug. 4, 2015) - Last week, LIU Post women's lacrosse senior defender/midfielder
Honey Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) and former All-America standout
Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) traveled to Jamaica to educate the young population on the game of lacrosse, through Fields of Growth International's Lacrosse Volunteer Corps.
Roche and Sileo helped to organize a free clinic for Jamaican lacrosse players and assisted in donating over 200 pounds of equipment, including clothes, sticks, balls, pads and helmets.
The two Pioneers also joined in several community service initiatives to aid the Caribbean's less fortunate. Roche and Sileo visited elderly homes, served in a soup kitchen, sent care packages to the homeless and played soccer with children living in an underprivileged neighborhood.
"It's hard to put into one sentence what this week has taught me," said Roche. "It was the most eye-opening and inspiring experience I have ever been a part of. I am just so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and learn so much about life."
The Lacrosse Volunteer Corps program enables lacrosse enthusiasts to coach, serve and learn in Jamaica. It boasts nearly 250 alumni, some of whom were NCAA Players of the Year and others whom never even played collegiate lacrosse.
Founded by former University of Scranton Head Lacrosse Coach Kevin Dugan in 2009, Fields of Growth International aims to harness the passion of the lacrosse community into positive social impact through global leadership development, service and growing the game.
