No. 5 Field Hockey Loses at Pace in Double Overtime, 2-1
Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2015) - The No. 5 LIU Post field hockey team dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision to Pace University Wednesday night in a non-conference tilt at Finnerty Field.
Following a scoreless first half that saw only three shots, the contest intensified in the latter 35-minute period.
Freshman forward/midfielder
Molly Cunha (North Easton, Mass.), who recorded a shot on goal in the opening stanza, broke the tie nearly midway through the second half. In the 53rd minute, she put home an
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) cross to give the Pioneers (2-1) a one-goal edge.
Three-plus minutes later though, the Setters (2-3) evened the score. Freshman midfielder Jane Kasparian (Mahopac, N.Y.) accounted for the equalizer, after re-directing a Jenna Sanossian (Miller Place, N.Y.) pass from the top of the circle into the cage.
LIU Post nearly got some late heroics at the end of regulation. As the Pioneers were awarded one last penalty corner before overtime, sophomore forward
Kaycee Zelkovsky (Lambertville, N.Y.) was turned aside on back-to-back shot attempts. In the final 7:58 of the second half, the visitors earned five penalty corners, but were unable to cash in against Pace's Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.).
During the two overtime sessions, the teams' respective goalies traded save for save, until Pace broke through in the 93rd minute.
Sophomore forward/defender Margaret Maclean (Ellicott City, Md.) beat LIU Post junior goalie
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) to the right side of the cage for the game-wining tally.
Overall, the Pioneers outshot the Setters, 19-6, and held a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. Between the pipes, Parks made three saves for LIU Post, while Alvarez stopped 12 shots for Pace.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and the Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Sept. 19), when they welcome in Merrimack College for their 2015 Northeast-10 Conference opener at 11 a.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville.
