OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2016) - The No. 2 LIU Post men's soccer team completed an unbeaten regular season Saturday with a 1-0 victory at East Coast Conference rival New York Institute of Technology at President's Stadium.
It is the first time in program history that the Pioneers (15-0-1, 8-0-1 ECC) have gone without a loss in the regular season. The green and gold have also captured the ECC regular-season title in seven of the last eight years.
LIU Post was tested throughout the first half, as it was outshot 11-2 in the period. However, senior goalkeeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) turned aside all four shots he faced in the opening 45 minutes.
Then, in the latter session, the Pioneers broke through in the 66th minute. Freshman forward
Michael Sutton (Bergen, Norway) tallied his first collegiate goal, off an assist from
Harry Pearse (London, England), to put the visitors in front.
Meanwhile, the Bears (10-4-3, 5-2-2 ECC) continued to be stymied by Malmstrom and the LIU Post back line, as they held NYIT off the scoreboard for the entire contest.
Malmstrom finished with a game-high five saves for the Pioneers in the match. His counterpart, Jonathan Rico (Elmhurst, N.Y.), recorded four stops for the Bears.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and his LIU Post squad have earned the No. 1 seed in next week's East Coast Conference Championship. They will host fourth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College in a semifinal bout on Thursday (Nov. 3) at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville.
