GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Nov. 11, 2016) - The No. 14 and third-seeded LIU Post women's soccer team defeated sixth-seeded Caldwell University, 3-0, in an NCAA Division II Tournament first-round match-up on Friday at Adelphi University's Motamed Field.

The win advances the Pioneers (15-3-2) to their third-consecutive appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The green and gold got on the board in the 12th minute, when sophomore forward Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) headed a Julia Backman (Morsil, Sweden) rebound past Cougars' (12-8-2) senior goalkeeper Kylie Whalen (Hazlet, N.J.).

Nearly nine minutes later, Backman fired a Klara Berggren (Stockholm, Sweden) pass into the mesh to extend LIU Post's lead to 2-0.

The Pioneers, who led 2-0 at the break, held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. They also held the Cougars without a shot for the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, freshman midfielder Medina Mulic (Ridgewood, N.Y.) capped off the scoring in the 65th minute. She fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the top-right corner of the net, making it a 3-0 game.

Between the pipes, sophomore netminder Hillevi Eklow (Väröbacka, Sweden) made five saves for LIU Post in the win. Whalen stopped seven shots for Caldwell.

Head Coach Mark Dawson and the Pioneers will now face No. 9 and top-seeded Adelphi University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 13) at 1 p.m. in Garden City.
