EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (Dec. 4, 2016) - Over the weekend, the LIU Post women's swimming team earned a runner-up finish at the 2016 ECAC Winter Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park.
The Pioneers amassed 992.5 points at the three-day meet, en route to a second-place finish. The green and gold trailed Wagner College (1,096) for the title by just over 100 points.
Junior
Laura Bendfeldt (Grosshansdorf, Germany), who was named the ECAC Swimmer of the Meet, won a pair of events and recorded three NCAA "B" cuts in the process. She placed first in the 50- (23.56) and 100-yard freestyle (51.21) and took second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.45).
Sophomore
Eline Swensen (Langhus, Norway) came in first in the 500-yard freestyle, after posting a lifetime-best and NCAA-provisional 5:04.69. She also swam the first leg of the Pioneers' 800-yard freestyle relay, which won the event in 7:49.47.
Freshman
Tove Sparrman (Upplands Väsby, Sweden) bested her opposition and clocked an NCAA "B" cut in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.34), while placing fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (58.45) and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (52.30). Additionally, she joined Bendfeldt and sophomores
Caitlin Johnstone (Ashburton, New Zealand) and
Brianna LiCausi (Howard Beach, N.Y.) to record a second-place time of 1:35.22 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Johnstone touched the pad at a third-place mark of 2:25.05 in the 200-yard breaststroke. She was also fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.43) and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (59.52). Fellow sophomore
Karis Fuller (London, England) achieved second-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.57) and 200-yard individual medley (2:09.21) and added a third-place showing (57.44) in the 100-yard backstroke.
In the 400-yard medley relay, Johnstone and Fuller, along with Sparrman and Bendfeldt, teamed up for a winning time of 3:52.31.
Sophomore
Elin Kvarnemar (Varberg, Sweden) came in sixth (2:10.45) in the 200-back and had a solid 10th-place swim of 1:00.36 in the 100-back. Junior
Jacqueline Tonn (Edmonton, Alberta) was seventh in the 200-breast, clocking a 2:27.77. Freshman
Cassie St. Angelo (Wakefield, R.I.) placed 11th (1:00.44) in the 100-back.
In the meet's final race, the group of Johnstone, Bendfeldt, Swensen and LiCausi finished second (3:31.84) in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
