Baseball Falls to No. 6 St. Edward's in Series Opener
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 26, 2016) - On Friday afternoon, the LIU Post baseball team fell to St. Edward's University, 12-2, in non-conference play at Lucian-Hamilton Field in Austin.
The Pioneers (0-5) found themselves down early as junior pitcher
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) ran into trouble in the opening frame. The sixth-ranked Hilltoppers (11-3) scored seven runs in the first, ending DeCarli's day after just one inning.
LIU Post got on the board in the fourth when junior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) singled home sophomore right fielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.).
The Hilltoppers added three in the bottom of the fourth, one in the sixth and another in the eighth.
In the top of the ninth with a runner on first, freshman pinch hitter
Ryan Dalton (Bohemia, N.Y.) collected his first career hit, a single to right, that put runners on the corners. Then, fellow freshman
Joe Piscitelli (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with his first career hit and run batted in with a single to right-center, making it 12-2. That would be all the offense the Pioneers would get as Evan Tubbs struck out the final two batters of the contest.
Asbaty and junior designated hitter
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) both finished with two hits. Andreoli and sophomore shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) swiped their fourth and third bases of the young season, respectively.
Head coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to the diamond on Saturday (Feb. 27) when they take on St. Edward's in a doubleheader. The first pitch of Game One is set for 1 p.m. ET.
