WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2016) - For the second-straight game, the LIU Post women's basketball team was led by senior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.), as the Pioneers handled Mercy College, 67-32, in East Coast Conference action Wednesday at the Westchester County Center.
Brown scored 15 points, eclipsing the 10-point mark for the third-straight contest, to key LIU Post (4-17, 4-9 ECC) to its second-consecutive win.
The Pioneers used solid defense to hold Mercy (6-13, 3-9 ECC) to just 28.0 percent shooting in the first half. Junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) and freshman guard
Amber Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the green and gold with seven points apiece in the opening half. Messam did most of her damage from the free-throw line, as the junior went 5-for-6 from the stripe.
After allowing just 18 points in the first half, the defense turned up the pressure and limited the Mavericks to just 14 points in the second half on 4-of-23 shooting. The Pioneers also caused eight turnovers in the second half, which amounted to 17 points off turnovers. Additionally, LIU Post dominated down low, scoring more than half its points in the paint
(36).
Brown tallied nine points in the latter half, going 3-for-5 from three-point range. Senior forward
Kalinka DeRoche (New Haven, Conn.) cleaned up the glass by bringing down a season-high 13 rebounds. Messam finished with 13 points and six boards.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 6), when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College in an ECC showdown at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
