BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2016) - Junior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and freshman hurler
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) each threw complete-game shutouts Saturday, propelling the LIU Post softball team to 1-0 and 5-0 wins against St. Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference twinbill at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
Game #1: LIU Post 1, St. Thomas Aquinas 0In the opener, a fielding mistake by the Spartans in the bottom of the fifth gave the Pioneers the only run they would need. With a runner on second and one out, freshman shortstop
Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) legged out an infield single to advance
Claire Travis (East Meadow, N.Y.) to third, but the subsequent throw by STAC's Kelcy McGeehan (Bayville, N.J.) went astray, allowing Travis to score the eventual game-winning run.
Martin, who yielded just four hits, ran into her only trouble of the day in the first inning. Despite putting runners on the corners, she induced a two-out liner to freshman second baseman
Alex Hutchins (Wading River, N.Y.) to end the threat.
Martin finished with eight strikeouts over her seven innings of work. The victory improved her record to 6-3 on the season.
Game #2: LIU Post 5, St. Thomas Aquinas 0During the nightcap, Olshevski scattered only one hit in a complete-game effort. She retired the first nine batters to face her and allowed just one runner to reach scoring position.
The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the second, when sophomore outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) plated sophomore designated player
Emily DeVito (Preston, Conn.) with an RBI single.
Then, in the third, an RBI hit by sophomore outfielder
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) and a bases-loaded walk to Marrone extended the green and gold's lead to 3-0.
LIU Post later tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth to close out the scoring. DeVito supplied an RBI double to left-center in the fifth, while senior third baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) slapped an opposite-field RBI single to right in the sixth.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers are back in action Monday (Mar. 28), when they travel to Sparkill to face St. Thomas Aquinas in the latter part of a home-and-home set. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
