BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 28, 2016) - On Monday, LIU Post baseball freshman pitcher Brian Kavanagh (East Meadow, N.Y.) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout against Molloy College, as the Pioneers salvaged the final game of a four-game set, 9-0, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.

The Pioneers (9-11, 1-3 ECC) gave the freshman pitcher an early 1-0 lead after senior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) drove in sophomore centerfielder Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) for the game's first run.

From there, Kavanagh found a rhythm and settled in and got some help from his battery mate, junior catcher Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.).

Asbaty threw out three Molloy (14-7, 3-1 ECC) runners attempting to steal between the second and third innings.

In the bottom of the third with a runner on, Groeneveld smacked a triple to right field, scoring sophomore shortstop Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.). As the Lions were trying to throw Groeneveld out at third, the throw got away and the first baseman was able to trot home, making it a 3-0 game.

Over the next three innings, Kavanagh allowed three base runners, none of which made it past second base.

In the bottom of the seventh, Andreoli plated freshman third baseman Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) with a single up the middle, before Asbaty doubled him home. Later in the inning, Asbaty scored on a passed ball, making it 6-0 Pioneers.

The following inning, Asbaty roped a run-scoring single. Groeneveld followed with a double off the base of the wall in right-center that scored two more, giving the green and gold a 9-0 advantage.

Kavanagh returned to the mound for the top of the ninth in search of his first career win and the East Meadow native retired the Lions in order to do so.

The righty scattered three hits, walked two and struck out three to get the win. Andreoli, Groeneveld and Mendyk all had three-hit games. Groeneveld also had four RBIs, while Asbaty had two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Head Coach Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 30), when they host 11th-ranked East Stroundsburg University in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from Brookville.
