Baseball Falls to Dowling in ECC Twinbill

Box Score 2 BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2016) - The LIU Post baseball team dropped both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader to Dowling College, 13-7 and 11-5, on Sunday at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven.
The opener was a back-and-forth affair, until Dowling (11-14, 5-2 ECC) took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth,
In the top of the first, a
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) double gave the Pioneers (10-17, 2-9 ECC) a 1-0 lead. The Golden Lions then tied it in the bottom of the second.
Later, in the fourth, the Pioneers pushed across three runs. Sophomore center fielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) doubled home a run, before sophomore shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) produced a run with an RBI groundout. Junior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) followed with an RBI single back up the middle.
Again, the Golden Lions had an answer. Dowling scored three of its own in the bottom half of the inning and added two in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Pioneers scored a run on an error, before Groeneveld doubled home two runs to give the green and gold a 7-6 advantage.
But, the Golden Lions would score two in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-7 lead and tacked on four in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth to seal it.
In the nightcap, the Pioneer defense struggled to back starter
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.), as the Pioneers fell 11-5.
The lefty labored through five innings, allowing eight runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks.
The Pioneer offense came from Andreoli (2-for-3 with an RBI), Asbaty (2-for-4 with two RBIs) and Spitaleri (2-for-4 with an RBI).
