BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post baseball team dropped both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader to St. Thomas Aquinas College, 4-3 in 12 innings and 3-2, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.

In the opener, The Spartans (19-6, 5-1 ECC) got on the board in the first with an RBI double. After that, junior pitcher Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) found a groove and settled in.

The offense gave him some help in the bottom of the second, when sophomore designated hitter Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.) smaked a two-run double off the fence in right-center to give the Pioneers (9-13, 1-5 ECC) a 2-1 advantage.

Later, in the fourth, Doria would come around to score after senior left fielder John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) reached with a bloop single down the right field line. The throw  in to third was low and that allowed Doria to come in, making it a 3-1 ballgame.

DeCarli cruised through the next four innings, but ran into trouble in the ninth.

With the Pioneers leading 3-1 and the righty looking for his second win of the season, DeCarli allowed a first-pitch home run to Giovanni Dingcong. Later in the frame, the Spartans had the tying run on third. DeCarli got pinch hitter Jonathon McGugan to strike out swinging, but the ball got away from catcher Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.), who threw down to first to retire McGugan. Pinch runner Andre Jackson was able to beat first baseman David Groeneveld's (Centereach, N.Y.) return throw home, sending the game to extra innings.

Both teams threatened in the 10th and 11th innings, but the Spartans broke through in the 12th with a run.

George Navadel worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th for the save.

In the second game, a throwing error from catcher Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) allowed the Spartans' first run to score.

Later, in the third, St. Thomas Aquinas added a run on a double, making it 2-0.

In the bottom of the inning, freshman third baseman Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored on a throwing error for the first LIU Post run.

The next inning, Mendyk singled home Fagan, tying the game at 2-all.

In the sixth, the Spartans scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers were victims of a bad bounce as a wild pitch caromed back to the catcher and pinch runner Michael Greene (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) was out at the plate, ending the game.

Due to a poor weather forecast for Sunday (Apr. 3) the doubleheader between the Pioneers and Spartans has been postponed.  No makeup date has been announced.
