No. 4 Women's Lacrosse Loses Tight Contest to No. 1 Adelphi, 4-3
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2016) - The No. 4/5 LIU Post women's lacrosse team had its six-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 4-3 loss to top-ranked Adelphi University in a non-conference tilt at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Down 2-0 nearly 10 minutes into the opening period, the Pioneers (7-2) cut the deficit in half on an
Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) goal at the 20:04 mark.
LIU Post eventually trailed 2-1 at the intermission, but quickly tied the game in the latter 30-minute session. Less than three minutes in, freshman midfielder
Ryan McKinney (Downingtown, Pa.) netted a free-position tally to even the score.
Though the Panthers (8-0) later retained their two-goal advantage, the Pioneers fought back in the final minutes. An unassisted goal by junior attacker
Connor Bird (Syosset, N.Y.) with 3:22 remaining closed the gap to 4-3.
That turned out to be the closest the hosts would get to securing another comeback. A last-ditch game-tying attempt by
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) at the horn was stopped by Adelphi's Taylor Hayes (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).
Between the pipes, sophomore goalie
Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made a game-high seven saves for LIU Post, including four in the second half. She also scooped up two ground balls in the process.
LIU Post was successful on 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) clears in the contest, and converted 1-of-3 (33.3 percent) free-position shots.
Head Coach
Meghan McNamara and the Pioneers are back in action Wednesday (Apr. 6), when they host University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference showdown at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium at 4 p.m.
