BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2016) - The LIU Post softball team lost a 6-5 hard-fought 13-inning contest to Dominican College Friday, and finished in a 1-1 tie in the nightcap in a non-conference twinbill at the LIU Post Softball Complex.

Game #1: LIU Post 5, Dominican 6 - 13 Inn.
Trailing 3-0 after the top of the first, the Pioneers rallied with two runs in the last of the first and third innings to grab a 4-3 lead.

In the first, LIU Post closed the gap to a single run, as a two-out error by Dominican scored sophomore outfielder Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) and freshman shortstop Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.).

Then in the third, senior designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.), who later came home in the frame on a passed ball for the go-ahead run, hit an RBI double to left-center to knot it at 3-all.

The Chargers eventually re-took the lead in their final turn at-bat, until the Pioneers forced extras with a run in their half of the seventh.

Down to their final strike, senior third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) kept the green and gold alive, ripping a game-tying RBI double to left-center, plating Marrone.

Dominican was the one to win it in extra innings though. An RBI single from Taylor Gilligan (Medford, N.J.) in the top of the 13th put the Chargers ahead for good.

Freshman pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) took the loss for the Pioneers in the decision. She threw two innings of relief, surrendering five hits and one run. Junior hurler Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) made the start, yielding five runs (four earned) and two walks with eight strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work.

Game #2: LIU Post 1, Dominican 1 - 9 Inn.
The latter game again saw extra frames, as the two squads battled to a 1-1 tie through seven innings. This time, neither squad was able to break the deadlock, before the umpires called it due to darkness.

LIU Post (20-7-1) struck first in the sixth, when Marrone hit an infield single to bring around sophomore outfielder Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) from second. That left the Pioneers only three outs to get.

However, Dominican (16-11-1) fought back in the seventh. A two-out RBI single by Brianna Arends (Raritan, N.J.) sent the contest into extras.

The Pioneers and Chargers both stranded two runners in the eighth, and went down quietly in the ninth, capping the afternoon's play.

In the circle, Olshevski went the full nine innings, allowing seven hits and one run, while fanning a pair.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad are right back at it Saturday (Apr. 9), when they travel to Pleasantville for a noon doubleheader at Pace University.
