BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 31, 2016) - LIU Post Head Women's Swimming Coach
Michael Travers has recently announced the signing of four swimmers for the 2016-17 season. The talented group includes three state qualifiers and a medalist on the international stage.
The four incoming Pioneers are
Jessica Argelander (La Verne, Calif.),
Elizabeth Law (Chester Springs, Pa.),
Cassandra St. Angelo (Wakefield, R.I.) and Tove Sparrmann (Stockholm, Sweden).
"This past season, we graduated four of the best leaders that we could have asked for. We have an outstanding group of four student-athletes coming in that have some big shoes to fill," Travers said about his first recruiting class. "Our four recruits, Jessica, Elizabeth, Cassandra and Tove, are all very unique in the water. Academically speaking, we look forward to what they will be able to add to complement our team's excellent GPA."
Argelander was a four-time California Interscholastic Federation State qualifier at Bonita High School in La Verne. She was named the Most Valuable Swimmer and Team Captain by her peers as a junior and senior, and was recognized as a Scholar-Athlete in each semester at the school.
"Jessica was a late recruit and we are looking forward to what she is going to bring to our sprint group," Travers stated. "Immediately following her commitment, Jessica started dropping time in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and we are excited to see how she will grow in the upcoming season."
Law helped Villa Maria Academy to four-straight Pennsylvania State AA Championships. She was also a YMCA Long Course National Championship qualifier in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard breaststroke and seven different relay events.
"Elizabeth is a versatile swimmer, both in and out of the pool. She is a straight A student with straight A swims," Travers said. "Elizabeth will certainly help us to build on our individual medley events, and assist in picking up points in short-distance races. She can swim anything from a 50 to a 1,650, which makes us excited to see where she will set her sights in her collegiate career."
St. Angelo was the recipient of the Breakout Swimmer and Good Under Pressure Award at Prout School in Wakefield. She was selected as the team captain of her high school squad and went on to earn All-State honors in the 200-yard medley relay.
"Cassie is a backstroker that will be a huge asset to our team," Travers commented. "She will be a great training partner for
Elin Kvarnemar, and help us to build our relays. Cassie is pretty versatile in many other events and we are excited to see what she can accomplish as a freshman."
Sparrmann has medaled at the Swedish National Championships and holds two national age group records in relays. Additionally, she has competed in the pool in four other European countries (Denmark, Finland, Poland and the Netherlands).
"Tove is a very important recruit for us this year. We are excited to see the depth that she can add to our program," Travers stated. "She will be a great asset in all of the freestyle events."
