NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Sept. 17, 2016) - The No. 7 LIU Post field hockey team remained unbeaten Saturday with a 2-1 overtime victory at Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference action at Martone-Mejail Field.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Pioneers (4-0, 1-0 NE-10) constantly threatened in the period. The green and gold had nine shots on goal in the opening 35 minutes, all of which were stopped by Warriors' (0-4, 0-1) freshman goalie Katharina Ohmen (Bremen, Germany).
LIU Post kept up the intensity in the latter session, and broke through in the 39th minute. Sophomore forward
Kaycee Zelkovsky (Lambertville, N.J.) converted for her second goal of 2016, staking the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead.
But, in the 56th minute, Merrimack evened the contest. Senior midfielder Nicole Bradley (Essex, Mass.) came out of the scramble in front of the cage to net the equalizer.
The Pioneers, who outshot the Warriors by an overwhelming 30-10 count, were not going to be denied though. Sophomore forward/midfielder
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) provided the heroics in overtime.
With 1:40 left in the extra session, she ripped a shot past Ohmen for the game-winner. It was Miller's third game-winning goal in the team's first four contests.
Senior goaltender
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) made four saves for LIU Post in the effort. Her counterpart, Ohmen, recorded 18 stops for Merrimack.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and the Pioneers are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 21), when they return home to face Assumption College in an NE-10 showdown at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium at 4 p.m.
