Brookville, NY| Despite a game-best 22 points (5-12 FG) from sophomore Jared Rivers, the LIU Post men's basketball team was handed a 75-64 defeat by Goldey-Beacom inside the Pratt Center on Wednesday night.
With the loss the Pioneers slide to 2-5 on the year as the Lightning improve to 2-4.
The Pioneers found themselves down 23-10 at the midway point of the first half before a Rivers three-ball closed the gap to 10 (23-13). A pair of free throws from GBC re-extended the Lightning's lead to 13 points (32-19) at the 6:39 mark and maintained its sizeable lead before closing out the half with a 7-0 run to take the 45-28 advantage into halftime.
Goldey-Beacom took the largest lead of the night (52-30) five minutes into the second half. Down by 17 points (61-44) with 5:30 left to play, a Richard Altenord layup sparked a 12-4 run by the Pioneers to pull within nine (65-56) of the visitors. With momentum on their side the Pioneers tried to mount a comeback but Goldely-Beacom closed out the game with a 75-64 victory.
Rivers registered his second-straight double-digit tally with 22 points and dished out three assists on the night.
Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor contributed with nine points and a career-best 14 rebounds, while Altenord netted nine points before fouling out of the contest.
Goldey-Beacom outshot LIU Post from the field 43.33%-41.1% but the Pioneers held the advantage in second chance points (14-9) and points in the paint (28-24).
The Pioneers will open conference play against the University of Bridgeport at home on Wednesday Dec. 8 at 7:00 PM. Follow the action here.
