PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 17, 2017) - On Friday, the LIU Post women's swimming team began its quest for a fifth-straight Metropolitan Conference Championship at the Rutgers Aquatic Center in Piscataway.
The Pioneers, who completed Day One in fifth place out of 15 teams, swam a combined 10 NCAA "B" cuts in four events.
The green and gold led off the meet with a winning time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior
Laura Bendfeldt (Grosshansdorf, Germany), sophomores
Caitlin Johnstone (Ashburton, New Zealand) and
Elin Kvarnemar (Varberg, Sweden) and freshman
Tove Sparrman (Upplands Väsby, Sweden) raced to an NCAA-provisional 1:35.64.
Bendfeldt also won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.32, while Johnstone tied for fourth at 23.93. Sophomore
Brianna LiCausi (Howard Beach, N.Y.) added an eighth-place finish of 24.84 in the sprint. Sparrman had a personal-best 24.46 in the "B" final, which was good for a 10th-place showing.
In the preliminaries of the 50-free, Johnstone placed second at 23.85. Freshmen
Jessica Argelander (La Verne, Calif.) and
Cassie St. Angelo (Wakefield, R.I.) clocked times of 24.75 and 24.97, respectively.
Sophomores
Karis Fuller (London, England) and
Eline Swensen (Langhus, Norway) each recorded NCAA "B" cuts in the 500-yard freestyle. Fuller finished second (5:00.35) in the finals, after winning the preliminaries in 4:58.97. Swensen touched the pad at a fourth-place time of 5:05.54.
Lastly, in the preliminaries of the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Kvarnemar, St. Angelo, LiCausi and junior
Jacqueline Tonn (Edmonton, Alberta) came in second at 3:59.02. Tonn added a personal-best 2:14.36 in the 200-yard individual medley, as well.
