MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 24, 2017) - A seventh-inning grand slam from sophomore catcher
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) sent the LIU Post baseball team to a 9-5 come-from-behind win versus Felician University at the 2017 Northeast Challenge Friday in Myrtle Beach.
Trailing 5-1 through six innings of play, the Pioneers (3-3), who rallied for their second victory in as many games, exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead.
Vaglica provided the heroics for the green and gold with a one-out grand slam. He took a 3-1 offering from John-Paul Codelia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) out to left field, which gave LIU Post a 7-5 advantage.
Then, in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers tacked on two insurance runs to pull away from the Golden Falcons (1-1).
After back-to-back walks to open the frame, senior outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) drove in fellow senior
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) with an RBI double to right field.
Daley later advanced to third on a wild pitch that also scored Vaglica for the game's final run.
Senior pitcher
Chris Anderson (West Islip, N.Y.) earned the win in the decision. He allowed three hits and two runs in an inning of relief. Meanwhile, red-shirt sophomore hurler
Robert Paccione (Commack, N.Y.) tossed three shutout innings for the save.
Sophomore right-hander
James Varela (Levittown, N.Y.) was tagged with the no-decision in the contest. He pitched five innings of three-hit, three-run, three-walk, four-strikeout ball for LIU Post.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Feb. 25), when they take on Merrimack College and Southern Connecticut State University at the 2017 Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach. First pitch is set for 1:30 and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
