Wrestling Goes 1-2 at Shippensburg Quad
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 4, 2017) - On Saturday, the LIU Post wrestling team went 1-2 at the Shippensburg University Quad at Heiges Field House in Shippensburg.
The Pioneers (10-8) kicked things off with a convincing 26-17 win against West Liberty University, before suffering a 36-4 loss to Wheeling Jesuit University and a 26-19 defeat to Shippensburg.
LIU Post 26, West Liberty 17
Trailing 3-0 in the opener, the Pioneers won five of their next six matches to grab a commanding 23-6 lead versus the Hilltoppers (2-12).
Freshman
Anthony Sparacio (North Babylon, N.Y.) evened the score with a 10-9 decision over Bryce Humphreys (Winfield, W. Va.) at the 133-lb. weight class.
Then, at 141, senior
Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) catapulted the green and gold in front with a 4-0 blanking of Josh Ridgeway (Mannor, Pa.).
Senior
T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) followed that up with his team-leading sixth fall of the year, pinning Joshua Spurlock (Charmco, W. Va.) in 4:02 at 149 lbs.
Red-shirt junior
Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) contributed a 17-1 teching of Tryston Kessler (Charmco, W. Va.) at 157, while senior
Jesse Meaney (Toms River, N.J.) pinned Carlos Kusic (Bridgeport, Ohio) in 2:18 at the 174-lb. bout.
West Liberty rallied though and closed the gap to 23-17, but junior
James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) secured the win for LIU Post with a hard-fought 5-3 decision versus Chris Cook (Akron, Ohio) at heavyweight.
LIU Post 4, Wheeling Jesuit 36
In the loss to Wheeling Jesuit (12-5), the Pioneers kept the matches close, dropping five bouts by five points or less.
Fabian majored Brandon Tenney (Buckhannon, W. Va.) by a 12-3 count at the 149-lb. weight class to account for the green and gold's lone victory of the contest.
In the 133-lb. match, Sparacio fell just short in a 3-2 loss to Dustin Warner (Dennison, Ohio). The decision was only Sparacio's second defeat of the year at 133 lbs.
Turano suffered a tough 5-2 defeat against Nolan Whitely (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) at 141. Two matches later, Mordente dropped a 5-1 decision to Greg Brusco (Delaware, Ohio) at 157.
Lastly, at 174, Meaney came out on the short side of a 2-1 loss to Reyse Wallbrown (Indian Lake, Ohio).
LIU Post 19, Shippensburg 26
Down 5-0 after the opening bout, the Pioneers quickly came back to grab the lead.
Sparacio slashed into the Red Raiders' (12-12) lead with a 14-6 majoring of Cole Rush (Waynesburg, Pa.) at 133. Turano then won via forfeit at the 141-lb. match to stake the visitors to a five-point advantage (10-5).
However, Shippensburg answered back with four straight victories to put the contest out of reach. Junior
Ed Ramirez, Jr. (Amityville, N.Y.) lost a 5-0 decision to Ryan Narber (West York, Pa.) at 165 lbs.
Louison ended the afternoon on a high note for LIU Post, claiming an 8-4 victory over Derek Berberick (Greensburg, Pa.) in the heavyweight bout.

Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers are back in action next Saturday (Feb. 11), when they travel to Portland, Maine to wrestle at the University of Southern Maine Tri-Match at 1 p.m.
