BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2017) - On Wednesday, the No. 20 LIU Post baseball team came from behind to defeat Pace University, 6-4, in the latter game of a home-and-home series at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.
Trailing 2-0 at the midway point of the contest, the Pioneers (7-4) exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab a two-run lead.
Junior outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) sliced the deficit in half with an opposite-field RBI single, after a lead-off double by sophomore infielder
Michael Greene (Stewart Manor, N.Y.).
Two batters later, senior outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) plated Andreoli from third with a game-tying RBI double to straight-away center.
The green and gold weren't done there. Sophomore outfielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) had the exclamation point of the inning -- a two-out, two-RBI single to left
to put LIU Post in front.
The Setters (3-1) fought back though to close the gap to 4-3, but sophomore infielder
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) answered with a two-RBI double in the sixth to increase the Pioneers' lead to 6-3.
Senior pitcher
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) was summoned from the bullpen in the eighth for his third closing opportunity of 2017, and locked down the five-out save. He fanned four batters in the process.
Meanwhile, freshman starter
Noah Lorenzo (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) tossed six innings of four-run, two-walk, four-strikeout ball to earn his third-consecutive victory.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and his LIU Post squad are back in action Friday (Mar. 10), when they host University of the Sciences in a doubleheader at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville. First pitch is set for noon.
