CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 9, 2017) - On Thursday, the LIU Post softball team split a pair of 1-0 decisions against Wilmington University and Walsh University at the 2017 PFX Spring Games in Clermont.

Game #1: LIU Post 0, Wilmington (Del.) 1
In the opener, the Pioneers, who were retired in order in five of the seven innings, mustered just one hit off Wildcats' (9-5) sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.).

The green and gold threatened to strike first in the top of the fifth, but freshman outfielder Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) was stranded on third after back-to-back popouts.

Then, in the sixth, LIU Post put the first two runners on in an attempt to tie the game. However, Whiteside struck out the next two hitters to preserve the shutout.

Senior pitcher Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) took the loss in the decision. She allowed just three hits and two walks and fanned seven in 6.0 innings of work.

Game #2: LIU Post 1, Walsh 0
In the nightcap, it was the Pioneers (5-3) that scored the game's only run.

Fortin, who earned a lead-off walk, eventually advanced to third on an infield error by the Cavaliers (6-9). Shortly thereafter, senior infielder Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) drove her in for the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) worked her way out of a pair of one-out jams in the contest, en route to improving to 3-0 on the year. She tossed a complete-game effort, allowing four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad close out their trip to the PFX Spring Games on Saturday (Mar. 11), when they take on Le Moyne College and No. 22 Wayne State University (Mich.) at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
