BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2017) - The LIU Post softball team came up short Sunday in a pair of losses to East Coast Conference rival Molloy College at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
The Pioneers (23-21, 9-11 ECC) dropped a 4-0 decision in the opener and lost a tough 7-5 extra-inning contest to the Lions (26-14, 13-6 ECC) in the nightcap.
Game #1: LIU Post 0, Molloy 4
In the opener, the Pioneer bats were stalled by senior pitcher Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.), who let up just three hits and one walk and fanned 10 in a complete-game effort.
The two teams played five scoreless innings, until the Lions broke the tie with a four-run sixth. The visitors scored all their runs with two outs in the frame.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was tagged with the loss in the decision. She allowed five hits, four runs and two walks with one strikeout in seven innings of work.
Game #2: LIU Post 5, Molloy 7 - F/8
In the nightcap, the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning, after back-to-back solo homers by sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) and freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada).
The green and gold eventually led 5-0 through six innings of play. Sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) lined an RBI single in the fifth, while junior outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) bunted for an RBI single in the sixth.
However, the Lions came back to tie the score in their final turn at-bat. Junior shortstop Brianna Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) launched a game-tying grand slam to left to force extra innings.
Then, in the eighth, Molloy got RBI hits from junior catcher Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) and senior second baseman Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) to take the lead for good.
Olshevski gave up both runs in the eighth, en route to receiving the loss. Freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) earned the no-decision, tossing seven innings of seven-hit, five runs and four walks, five-strikeout ball.
