EASTON, Mass. (Apr. 7, 2017) - On Friday, the LIU Post softball team settled for a split of a non-conference doubleheader against Stonehill College at Father William Gartland Field in Easton.
The Pioneers (13-11) won a 2-0 decision over the Skyhawks (4-19) in the opener, before falling 8-3 in the nightcap.
Game #1: LIU Post 2, Stonehill 0
In the opener, the Pioneers got a complete-game shutout from sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) to solidify the victory. She yielded eight hits and one walk in the effort, but allowed only one runner to advance past second base.
The Pioneers broke through for the game's only runs in their first turn at-bat. After a lead-off infield single by junior outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.), freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) put the visitors on the board with a two-run homer to right-center.
The Skyhawks nearly sliced the deficit in half in the fifth on a Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y.) double, but a perfect relay throw by freshman shortstop
Allie Laird (Holbrook, N.Y.) nailed Stonehill's Taylor Lester (East Northport, N.Y.) at the plate.
Despite surrendering the two runs, senior pitcher Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, N.J.) let up just five hits and one walk and struck out two in her outing for the hosts.
Game #2: LIU Post 3, Stonehill 8
Trailing 1-0 in the nightcap, the Pioneers scored three unanswered runs to grab a 3-1 advantage through three innings of play.
In the top of the second, freshman third baseman
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) put LIU Post in front with a go-ahead two-run homer to center.
Then, in the third, sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) went deep to left-center, making it a 3-1 game.
However, the Skyhawks exploded for a seven-run fourth to re-claim the lead for good. Senior outfielder Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore infielder Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Mass.) each homered in the frame for Stonehill.
In the circle, freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) was saddled with the loss for the Pioneers. She allowed nine hits, four earned runs and two walks, while striking out four in six innings of work.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad are back at it Saturday (Apr. 8), when they face Southern New Hampshire University at Stonehill's Father William Gartland Field at 3 p.m. in Easton.
