UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 12, 2017) - Sophomore designated hitter
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) delivered the eventual game-winning RBI single in the ninth Friday to propel the No. 2 seed LIU Post baseball team to a 1-0 win over No. 21 and top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College in the winner's bracket of the East Coast Conference Championship at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
The win sends the Pioneers (29-18) to their first ECC Championship appearance since 2010. The green and gold will face fourth-seeded Molloy College for the title at 10 a.m. on Sunday (May 14) at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
The Pioneers got things started in the ninth with a one-out double into the right-center field gap by junior shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.).
Three batters later, Vaglica smacked an 0-1 offering through the left side of the infield to plate Spitaleri for the game's opening run.
Then, in the bottom of the ninth, LIU Post relied on senior closer
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) to shut the door on the Spartans (38-14).
Despite allowing a two-out single that put the potential game-tying run on third, Jagiello struck out junior outfielder Giovanni Dingcong (Daly City, Calif.) on three pitches to seal the victory and earn his 10th save of the year.
Freshman pitcher
Noah Lorenzo (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was spectacular on the hill, tossing eight shutout frames of three-hit, two-walk, eight-strikeout ball. He was also perfect through the first 5.1 innings of the contest.
