ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (May 6, 2017) - The fourth-seeded LIU Post softball team will play for the 2017 East Coast Conference title, after earning a 6-2 come-from-behind victory against third-seeded New York Institute of Technology in an elimination game on Saturday at Bob Klein Field.
The Pioneers, who improved to 26-25 overall, will now face top-seeded Mercy College for the ECC Championship on Sunday (May 7) at noon at Smith Field in Dobbs Ferry.
Tied 2-2 in the fourth, the green and gold exploded for four runs to grab a commanding 6-2 advantage. Senior second baseman
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) put LIU Post in front with a bases-loaded RBI single.
Sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) then followed with a three-RBI bases-clearing double to widen the gap to a four-run game.
The Pioneers never looked back from there, as freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) worked 3.2 innings of scorless relief to seal the victory for the green and gold.
Earlier in the contest, LIU Post jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, after an RBI groundout by
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) and an RBI single from
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
