BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Behind a standout performance in goal by freshman
Rachel Vellis (Wayne, N.J.), the eighth-ranked LIU Post field hockey upending top-ranked East Stroudsburg, 3-1, at Bethpage Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Pioneers (3-0) opened the scoring as junior forward
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) found senior midfielder
Alyssa Lopresti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) for the score just 5:35 minutes into the contest.
Twenty-one minutes into the game, ESU's (5-1) Kelli Shapiro inserted the penalty corner to Sydney McCarthy for the game-tying marker.
Just over two-and-one-half minutes later, Miller took advantage of a breakaway from 40 yards out and beat the keeper for the eventual game-winner. In the 43rd minute, Miller fed freshman midfielder
Sammy Bell (Milngavie, Glasgow, United Kingdom) for an insurance tally, putting the contest out of reach for East Stroudsburg.
ESU outshot the green and gold by a 10-6 margin, including eight to five shots on goal. This led to Vellis racking up a whopping seven saves on the day to the Warriors' two. Sophomore midfielder Arantxa Rosainz Caloca (Guadelajara, Mexico) added a defensive save in the 57th minute.
Miller led the offense with four points (1g,2a), while Bell and Lopresti added two points each.
The Pioneers continue their homestand on Sunday (Sept. 17) when they will host Saint Michael's for their Northeast-10 Conference opener. The two squads are set to face-off at 11 a.m.
